How is mate tea traditionally prepared and drunk?
Mate tea is made from the brew of dried leaves of the mate bush (Ilex paraguariensis). Strictly speaking, it is not real tea at all, as it does not come from the tea plant genus Camellia Sinensis. The mate plant is mainly grown in southern Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, and has become an integral part of people's everyday lives there. The crushed leaves of the mate bush (also called yerba) are infused with cold or hot water and drunk from a calabash (also called matí). To drink from the small, bulbous vessel, a special drinking straw with a small sieve is traditionally used. This way, the mate leaves are not drunk with the tea, and the tea can even be re-infused several times. In Brazil, however, the mate leaves are finely ground and called erva mate.

Here's how you can prepare warm mate tea yourself:
- First fill the calabash halfway with mate leaves.
- Cover the opening of the calabash with the palm of your hand and then turn it upside down. Shake everything gently back and forth. This allows the coarser leaves to separate from the finer ones.
- Then press the mate leaves firmly onto the inner edge of the calabash using a little warm water.
- After you have inserted the drinking straw into the calabash and the leaves have swollen, slowly pour warm water (approx. 70 °C) into the rest of the vessel.
- Now let everything steep for 2-3 minutes and the tea is ready to drink.
Mate tea as a healthy coffee alternative!
A cup of coffee in the morning is an essential part of our daily lives and reliably gives us the energy boost we need to start the day. When this effect wears off, however, some people feel ill, unwell, and sometimes even dizzy. Mate tea offers the perfect alternative for people struggling with precisely these symptoms. The caffeine dose is lower and still provides a good level of wake-up. The caffeine content in mate tea is balanced out by theobromine and theophylline present. Yerba mate tea also impresses with its many beneficial properties. In addition to polyphenols, the tea contains vitamins A, B1, B2, and C and significantly more antioxidants than green tea. It stimulates digestion and can have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. Regular consumption of mate tea is said to not only inhibit the aging process, but also reduce appetite. It is therefore the perfect accompaniment to a healthy diet.

Pay attention to the origin of the mate tea
